" I don't know anywhere where the people are hungrier for education than South Sudan" ~ Emmanuel Jal ~ Former child soldier.

The scale of the crisis in the world’s youngest country (South Sudan) is staggering. Since the violence erupted on 15 December 2013, almost 750,000 children have been internally displaced and more than 320,000 are living as refugees. Hundreds of thousands of children have lost months of education in school, even as schools are starting to reopen. Children are still reported as being used by armed forces and groups in the conflict. With traditional social structures damaged, children are also increasingly vulnerable to violence, sexual abuse and exploitation. Photography by Sebastian Rich for UNICEF all rights reserved

Best friends through it all ............
Paul and John (not their real names) both twelve years old served as child soldiers together in the same unit. Somehow they survived to be given the chance to be children again. Along with Paul and John on April 17 2018 in a jungle clearing in  Yambio, South Sudan. Two hundred children are also released from armed groups. The children formally disarmed and hand over their uniforms. Across the country in 2018, there are still around 19,000 children serving in the ranks of armed forces and groups. UNICEF South Sudan is supporting the release of children back to their communities by reuniting children with their families, supporting interim care centers where children receive psycho social support, education and vocational training

For every 1,000 children born in Mozambique an average of 104 will die, making infant mortality one of the most urgent problems facing the country today. Ajok-Wol  buying sorghum in the market of the town Aweil, South Sudan. Sorghum is the only foodstuff that the price has not risen drastically as it is airdropped in the rural areas surrounding Aweil by The World food programme. Although this food aid is supposed to be free to the general populace it finds its way to the market and is sold for 400 Sudanese pounds per kilo. Ajok says "that if the sorghum does not come from the air I cannot afford to buy any other food and my family will starve to death". Ajok has eight children five girls and and three boys, She says "that life is so difficult for me to support my family as I have no work at all. Luckily all my children have little jobs here in the market doing all sorts of things from cleaning to washing and this helps. Two months ago I was just about able to give all the children two meals a day, but now everything is getting more and more expensive so its just one meal a day and its always sorghum every day". The last day of this assignment with UNICEF in fact the last frame from my camera ended in capturing a lifeless tiny bundle of immense sadness. Little Rita in the the first summer years of her short life died while I photographed in the Juba Children's Hospital South Sudan. Rita died of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) not because of famine caused by a natural disaster but by mans ongoing bloody wars in this stricken country. Cutting off road infrastructure for essential food supplies were they are most desperately needed. The tiny most vulnerable ones suffer and die in their thousands. To the men with guns and no heart for your country the Rita's of South Sudan are your terrible legacy. Photography by Sebastian Rich for UNICEF
